Woodland habitat creation in Oxfordshire
This partnership with a landowner in Oxfordshire will create an extensive area of native, broadleaf woodland and associated habitats, including ponds and pollinator-friendly, species rich grassland.
The project will also establish or enhance extensive hedgerows, and create a small, heritage variety orchard. We’re also planning an attempt to restore part of a former chalk stream.
Tree planting is designed to mimic natural woodlands and processes, involving irregular spatial planting patterns, the inclusion of natural regeneration, and medium term silviculture to create variable age structure of trees.
As well is restoring woodland and its biodiversity in an area that has very little cover, the project will more widely enhance local biodiversity, and will contribute to removing atmospheric carbon, helping to mitigate climate change.
